May 14 marks Children and Youth in Care Day – a day to reaffirm our commitment to supporting children who are in the care of children’s aid societies in Ontario. OPSEU is proud to represent thousands of dedicated, passionate children’s aid society workers, who ensure these children have every resource available to them to reach their potential.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to assess our priorities, including which services are necessary to the well-being of our society. We commend the Ontario government for recognizing the service that children’s aid society workers provide is “essential” during this pandemic. Ensuring that the youth in our child welfare system consistently have access to resources that make them feel safe, supported, and understood is one of the most important public services we can offer – it should always be a top priority.

The children and youth in our child welfare system are strong, intelligent, valuable contributors to our communities. We are always rooting for their success, and we will always protect, support and fight for our members who dedicate themselves to ensuring these children are provided the tools needed to live fulfilling, successful lives.

In solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU President
Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida, OPSEU First Vice-President/Treasurer
