OPSEU reaches agreements on cross-ministry job opportunities
Your MERC Teams have now reached agreements with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services with respect to opportunities between MCSCS institutions and MCYS youth centres.
The agreements cover MCSCS correctional officers and non-correctional officers, MCYS Youth Officers and non-Youth Officers, both permanent and fixed-term. Members will have the ability to apply for cross-ministry job trades and lateral transfers. Job-threatened members will also have the ability to apply for a transitional job trade with member who may be close to retirement and could access Surplus Factor 80 or bridge to pension or simply exit with a monetary package.
With the release of the March 27th Ontario Budget, we have now learned that the Chatham Jail and Brantford Jail will now close, as well as the full closure of the Toronto West Detention Centre. Your teams will now schedule talks with Ministry representatives with respect to the members impacted by this decision.
Corrections Reps meet in Toronto
Nearly 90 representatives from correctional institutions met in Toronto on March 28 to discuss ongoing issues at the facilities. The meeting, paid for by the participating locals, discussed topics such as the Ontario Budget, MCYS correctional facilities surplusing, use of force, ASMPP and the upcoming round of Corrections bargaining. The Corrections MERC also provided an update.
The Division thanks the members of Local 368, Central East Correctional Centre and Local 369, Central North Correctional Centre, for taking the initiative to organize this informative and strategic meeting.
