OPSEU Members’ Tour of Southern Africa
2012
July 7, 2011
The Social Justice Fund and the Live and Let
Live Fund Boards would like to offer OPSEU members more direct involvement
in our international solidarity work.
By involving our members on a broader scale we ensure greater buy-in
throughout our organization regarding international solidarity work.
Solidarity with workers, women’s organizations, indigenous groups, peasants
and human rights activists in Latin America, Africa and Asia, is crucial to
our understanding of the fight against global poverty, global capitalism and
the increasing gap between the rich and poor.
In the Fall of 2012, the Social Justice Fund and the Live and Let Live Fund
Board and staff will be organizing a tour of Southern Africa, an excellent
chance to go beyond traditional tourism and learn about community
development and social justice. The 3 week long OPSEU Solidarity Tour will
include 6 OPSEU members, one Board member and one staff person and will
accomplish
the following:
-
Travel to South Africa to visit sister
unions and at least one Stephen Lewis Foundation funded project;
-
One week in a small village project in
Malawi
and volunteering at a local school or clinic.
-
3 days of rest, relaxation and culture on
Lake Malawi or a game reserve.
Please see the attached pamphlet for more
details and send in your application (also attached) by the deadline –
December 1, 2011. Successful participants will be informed by February 1,
2012, and the tour will be in mid-to late August, 2012.
For more information, call Brenda Wall at extension 8268 or Cindy Forsyth at
extension 8788.
