Federal Election October 14th - OPSEU to Help Stop Harper

September 24, 2008 OPSEU is actively mobilizing the vote across the province to help prevent a majority Conservative government.  The union’s Executive Board has agreed on a strategy to get out the vote – especially in tight local races where Conservatives can stopped.  “We encourage all members to spread the word and to help get out the vote to forestall a Conservative majority”, said OPSEU President Smokey Thomas.  “Harper’s agenda is the same as Mike Harris’s was in Ontario.  He intends to deepen his cuts to public services and equity programs and hack away at public healthcare”, Thomas warned.  “Instead, what working families need is a progressive federal government committed to assisting the Ontario economy. more...

Ontario Legislature Reopens: McGuinty rejects unbridled tax cuts

March 18, 2008 The Ontario Legislature began sitting yesterday. In their opening remarks, the Conservatives echoed their Bay Street backers and called for yet more tax cuts.

Premier McGuinty responded with arguments that OPSEU hopes to hear more often from government members.  The Liberal leader’s response was, essentially, how can we build the society we want and provide public services if public policy debate is fixated on even lower taxes?

Attached is an abridged record of the opening exchanges from yesterday's Question Period.

Democracy well served by Reform: McQuaig

Noted columnist Linda McQuaig says anyone who has a problem with the principle behind the proposed electoral reform “has a problem with democracy:”

“Our first-past-the-post system typically allows parties to form governments – even majority governments – with less than 40 per cent of the popular vote.

The undemocratic nature of this is obvious, but the problem of correcting it is also obvious: The winning party has little incentive to make changes, which is why opportunities to alter this clearly flawed system come along so rarely.”

Election Year in Ontario - time to get involved!

October 10
is election day in Ontario, but it’s not too soon to get involved in a campaign that could have enormous impact on the future of public services in our province and the job security of OPSEU members. When the McGuinty Liberals came to power in 2003, they pledged to restore full-funding to our public services after eight years of budget cutbacks by the Harris-Eves regime. Sadly, the actual McGuinty track record has been less than promised. That’s why OPSEU is launching its Ontario Can Do Better campaign this election year. more...

Candidate Biographies

The Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform has completed its work and has recommended a new electoral system for Ontario.

The Assembly's recommendations are right in tune which what OPSEU has been advocating from the outset - a Mixed Member Proportional system that would add a healthy dose of proportional representation to future elections.  If adopted, the new voting system will be much more fair; every vote will count.  Now the work begins to help see the reforms adopted through a province-wide referendum on election day, October 10th.   Click here to see the full reform
