Get out and Vote!

Dear sisters and brothers:

OPSEU members have a lot at stake in today’s provincial election. That is why voting is so important. So please vote, and when you do, please vote for the party or candidate who will do the most to build public services in Ontario.

I also urge you to cast your ballot in the referendum on electoral reform. At this year’s OPSEU Convention, our elected delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of the new voting system called Mixed Member Proportional, or MMP.

With MMP, you’ll have more choice when you vote. The results will be fairer than they are now. Fair results will create real checks and balances in the Legislature. If we had had MMP all along, the destruction of public services by the Mike Harris Conservatives would not have happened.

So please vote in the referendum, and when you do, please choose Mixed Member Proportional.

In solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas
President, OPSEU

The Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform has completed its work and has recommended a new electoral system for Ontario.

The Assembly's recommendations are right in tune which what OPSEU has been advocating from the outset - a Mixed Member Proportional system that would add a healthy dose of proportional representation to future elections.  If adopted, the new voting system will be much more fair; every vote will count.  Now the work begins to help see the reforms adopted through a province-wide referendum on election day, October 10th.   Click here to see the full reform
