| Leah Casselman was elected to the unions top office for a third
two-year term April 9 at the unions annual convention, defeating challenger Will
Presley from North Bay by a margin of 419 to 342. Casselman
told convention delegates:
"Public education is more than just schools. Health care is
more than hospitals and doctors. The criminal justice system is more than just judges and
lawyers.
"We know family and social services is more than just applying
the law. We know that environmental protection has got to be so very much more than
getting your car exhaust checked.
"This is what public service is really about. We also know that
as front-line workers, we have a critical role in protecting quality public services. Our
union must never abandon this role, no matter what obstacles are placed in our way.
"There is more at stake here than the future
of unions, or our jobs. The social health of over 9 million people is what is at
stake."
Len Hupet was acclaimed to a second term in the office of First
Vice-President/ Treasurer.
