Lock Talk: A Publication of the OPSEU Corrections Campaign

July 27, 2001

No bargaining…yet

Rumours are circulating that bargaining has already started for the new OPS contract. Nothing could be further from the truth.

No contract talks have yet to take place with the employer. Bargaining for the 2002 OPS collective agreement is scheduled to begin in the early fall. The teams have received training, and are looking forward to lively round of negotiations.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact your regional team member. They are:

Region 1 - Mark Kotenan, Sarnia Jail
Region 2 - Barry Scanlon, Waterloo D.C.
Region 3 - Larry Cripps, Lindsay Jail
Region 4 - Jim Bothwell, Quinte D.C.
Region 5 - Dave Graves, Toronto Youth Assessment Centre
Region 6 - Rick Dagenais, Monteith Complex
Region 7 - Len Mason, Thunder Bay Jail

P&P button campaign kicks into gear

Fed up with stressful working conditions, inadequate pay and high caseloads, probation and parole officers across the province are picking up on the “Enough is Enough” campaign.

Requests for buttons are pouring in from offices across the province. OPSEU currently has some in stock, but another order has been placed in anticipation of the high demand.

If your local would like some “Enough is Enough” buttons, please call or e-mail Don Ford at OPSEU Head Office. Include the quantity and the address you would like the buttons sent to. To avoid duplication of orders, please only have your local president or highest-ranking local official submit the request.

Resolution Watch

The Resolution Warrior is taking no prisoners.

This week, eight more municipalities have joined those who oppose the privatization of Ontario’s correctional system. They are: the Township of Manitoulin (Manitoulin Island), the Township of Rideau Lakes (west of Brockville), the Township of Adjula-Tosorontio (southwest of Barrie), the Town of Perth, the Town of Cobalt (south of Haileybury), the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (near Cornwall), the Municipality of Assiginack (Manitoulin Island) and the Nation Municipality (east of Ottawa).

That brings the total number of current and former municipalities who support public correctional services to 256. The countdown towards 300 begins, and our thanks go to Len Mason of Local 737 (Thunder Bay Jail).

For campaign information, call Don Ford (ext. 442) or Pam Doig (ext. 687) at 1-800-268-7376 or (416) 443-8888.
