Aug. 9, 1998Report from the
OPSEU MERC Chair
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are at the point of no return where the rubber must hit the road. It is apparent
that this Ministry places absolutely zero value on harmonious labour relations. Despite
messages that this government values the work that we do, it is increasingly obvious that,
with the exception of some frontline managers, the employer does not respect its
employees, our clients, or the services that we provide.
Employee/employer relations are at an all-time low. Negotiating tables, originally
designed to promote program integrity and safeguard members during transitional plans,
have been reduced to a means whereby the employer can simply dictate its chosen path. This
type of sledgehammer negotiations is unacceptable.
In the very near future, we will be calling every one of you to support your MERC team.
We must be steadfast in our commitment to the people we serve. As front-line professionals
who provide quality services to the people of Ontario, we must continue to demand respect
at the negotiating table.
Our strength comes from program knowledge and solidarity. This employer would like to
believe that we have given up. But what have we got to lose? From desperation is spawned
creativity: We will prevail.
I will be speaking with local leaders in order to develop a game plan. Future dialogue
with the leaders of this Ministry is pointless.
Senior bureaucrats have indicated to me that this government would like to appear
fuzzier and warmer as it approaches the impending election. MCSS, once known
as the caring Ministry, has a lot of work to do to regain its reputation.
Daily, we are dealing with Ontario's most needy, vulnerable, and volatile citizens. They
have come to rely on our expertise and care. The people of this province expect and demand
a healthy, safe and inclusive Ontario.
In solidarity,
Bob Eaton
