Hundreds of Correctional Officers rallied at Queens Park in support of Local 248
August 30, 2012
Dripping from the rain but in high spirits, busloads of Correctional Officers from all over Southern Ontario
came to Queens Park Monday Aug. 28 to demonstrate their solidarity with the struggle of workers at Hamilton Wentworth Detention
Centre (HWDC). Led by President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and Dan Sidsworth, Chair of the Corrections Division, a large delegation
lined up to attend the first day of the legislature and drive home the point to the government that their members must not be
penalized for insisting on proper health and safety procedures in their workplaces.
This issue is still not resolved as management has broken off negotiations. In response, the union has withdrawn
from all joint committees (except Health and Safety). Dan Sidsworth, Chair of the Correction MERC has formally indicated this
in a letter to management.
