Agenda for OPS Fightback Meeting
In a message to activists attending the June 17-18
Fightback meeting, OPSEU President Smokey Thomas writes:
For OPSEU to organize and implement a
successful Fightback campaign that defeats the
government’s reckless effort to cut quality public
services and the jobs of OPS members, we must be
prepared by doing our homework. I believe the items
contained in this Agenda will go a great distance is
preparing us for the task ahead.
Organizers of the Fightback Meeting have
covered off all the key points that go into a successful
campaign. You’ll get the background you need as well as
what the current political and economic landscape looks
like. From there, we will move on to a thorough
discussion of the campaign tactics we must adopt and
implement to achieve success.
On behalf of the Executive Board, I wish
everyone a successful Fightback meeting
Our
Convention in April unanimously endorsed an action plan to
fight the continued attacks on OPS jobs and services,
including a two-day meeting of our MERCs (Ministry Employee
Relations Committees).
This
meeting will happen in Toronto, June 17-18. Participation
has been expanded to include the highest-ranking OPS member
for locals where the highest-ranking is
not a MERC chair
or member. A formal call package will go out shortly.
Our goals
through the fight back are to advocate for quality public
services and good jobs in our communities and enforce our
members’ rights through the layoffs. Our objectives for the
June 17-18 meeting are to equip our leaders with the
strategies and tools for vigorous contract enforcement and
effective mobilization.
