Update on Classification Grievance Process

The training for the Systems Officers Cluster Representatives was completed on October 1, 2001. These individuals are now able to offer you assistance as a resource person or as your direct advocate at Stage 2 hearings. Attached is an up to date listing of these cluster representatives.

The S.O. Cluster Representatives will be in contact with Ministry HR representatives regarding the grievances that have been filed, and attempting to consolidate same grievances.

What should you do now?

1. The first step, before you can complete the Stage 2 hearing is to have discussions with your employer and come to agreement on the contents of your job description.

2. Contact the Cluster representative listed for your cluster. This member will be able to assist you in evaluating your job description against the S.O. class standard. This is the evidence you will need to be successful at Stage 2. In some circumstances the S.O. Cluster representatives may be able to attend your Stage 2 to assist you with your case or be available by conference call for assistance and advice during your Stage 2 meeting.

3. Where it is beneficial and/or practical to consolidate same grievances or co-ordinate Stage 2 hearing dates geographically, your Cluster Rep. may contact you to suggest this approach.

4. If you encounter difficulties in this process contact Tim Mulhall at OPSEU
(416) 443-8888 Ext. 323.

Unfortunately Judy Grant who was previously listed as the Finance Cluster Representative is unable to fulfil this role at this time. Ron Marciniak of the Social Services Cluster will be available to assist those in the Finance Cluster.

If for some reason your grievance is not satisfactorily resolved at Stage 2 and you forward it to OPSEU for the JSSC you must include in your package:

(a) a copy of the grievance form
(b) a copy of your current job specification - if no agreement is reached on your job duties you need to provide;
     (1) The job specification your employer provided you.
     (2) A listing and rationale for your arguments against the job specification.
(c) Your rationale and arguments presented for justification of your position at a higher S.O. level
(d) A summary of the Stage 2 meeting along with any notes and materials which could assist the sub- committee.

The above should be addressed to Systems Officer Grievance, c/o OPSEU Grievance Dept. 100 Lesmill Road, Toronto, Ontario, M3B 3P8.
