Testing the new job classification system:
Please help if you’re asked
Your job needs
your help.
The last edition
of FRONTlines (Aug. 25) announced a fact-finding exercise to
help test the first draft of a new job classification system
for OPSEU jobs in the OPS.
“To get a feeling
for how we’re doing, we really need to have at least 200 OPSEU
members take part,” said John Watson, an OPSEU member on the
joint OPSEU/employer committee that has been working on the
draft since late last year. “So far, we’ve only got half that
number. That’s why we are telling OPSEU members that if you
receive an e-mail from the employer asking you to participate,
please participate.
“There is no way
that we can create a job classification system that is fair to
all members if we don’t get enough input from the workplace.”
The testing
involves completing a three-hour questionnaire and taking part
in a three-hour focus group session. Both the questionnaire
and the focus groups will be completed during work time.
The focus groups
are being held in London, Hamilton, Peterborough, Kingston,
Toronto, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay.
Taking part in the
questionnaire and focus groups will not affect how anyone’s
job is rated in the final job classification system, Watson
stressed.
“We are testing
the system, not the jobs,” he said.
