A bulletin for members in the Ontario Public Service

Lyn McLeod heats up pay issue

Region 7 members have clearly been lobbying their MPPs about the time it is taking for members to get their raises.

Here’s one tangible result of their actions: a letter from Lyn McLeod urging the government to pay up now.

The Honourable David Tsubouchi
Dear Minister:

I write in concern about your government’s failure to pay OPSEU employees the monies owed to them following the settlement of the labour dispute.

It is my understanding that the increase provided in the last pay period was short of the new rates that should apply and that the new rates do not, in fact, appear on the pay stubs. Since these rates were published on the government web site, immediately following the settlement, there is no reason why these rates are not being recognized and employee pay adjusted accordingly.

Your government has consistently devalued the work of public servants and you have repeatedly forced them into job action to defend their jobs. You should at least be prepared to honour the agreement that was finally reached.

I trust that the issue of monies owed will be addressed immediately.

Lyn McLeod, M.P.P.

Union pressure moves LTIP payments

OPS members on Long Term Income Protection should be seeing 3.5 per cent on their Aug. 31 payments.

And most will receive a separate individually-calculated payment covering their retroactive entitlement. Manulife has been working since July to do the individual calculations required for about 2,500 people receiving LTIP.

OPSEU Benefits Officer Diana Clarke explained that many of the retro payments have already been made and all should be complete in the next couple of weeks. If you think you are entitled to a retroactive LTIP payment and you haven’t seen it by mid September, you should call your claims adjudicator at Manulife.

Clarke cautioned that for some people, the increase in Canada Pension Plan disability payments and OPT pension deductions could eat up some or all of the retroactive pay.

Clarke and members on the Joint Insured Benefits Review Committee have been pushing hard to get the payments moved up for members on LTIP.

OPSEU is continuing the pressure to get the negotiated increases paid to all members who are entitled to them.
