OPS Campaigns
"Just because a particular
government department delivers a program today, does not mean it
should deliver it tomorrow.”
These words were in the 2011 Ontario
Budget released March 29, 2011. Later that spring, delegates voted
unanimously at the union’s annual Convention to support a fightback
against cuts and privatization in the OPS. OPSEU members started
campaigning against the cuts in late spring of 2011. The campaign’s
slogan was Cuts Hurt Us All.
The slogan “Choose Public” was created to oppose the
privatization of ServiceOntario. This slogan caught on with many
other OPSEU members who began using it to defend all
publicly-delivered services. Choose Public Day was held March
29, 2012, in many workplaces across the province. 14,000 purple
Choose Public wristbands were shipped to OPSEU locals in the spring
of 2012.
