Summer students are working hard and protesting their right to earn a fair wage
September 2, 2009
Summer students working for the Ontario government have been busy this summer working and protesting their right to earn a fair wage. The McGuinty government has reneged on their promise to pay approximately 5000 summer students 8.16 per cent of their gross pay added to their hourly wage rate in lieu of vacation and holiday pay, which amounts to a loss between $400 and $600.
Students working at Shoals Provincial Park organized an information picket on August 25th at the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) office in Chapleau, Ontario. The students, who are members of OPSEU Local 652, handed out more than 500 flyers to individuals. Students working at Rondeau Provincial Park, members of OPSEU local 130, also held a similar information picket on August 26th at their park which is thirty minutes from Chatham, Ontario.
Students found the public response very supportive and will continue with creative means to lobby the McGuinty government in the weeks ahead.
