Memo

To:        All unclassified employees, OPSEU bargaining unit, Ontario Public Service

Date:       December 21, 2001

Re:        A better deal for unclassified workers

Greetings:

It’s not easy being an unclassified employee.

If you are like most unclassified workers, a job with no benefits and no job security is probably not what you had in mind when you came to work in the public service. Unfortunately, your employer – the Ontario government – uses “unclassifieds” as a cheap way to provide public services. That’s nice for them. But you pay the price.

This round of collective bargaining is a chance to make your job a better job. Unclassified members do the same work as classified members, and deserve the same respect and recognition from this employer. Your OPSEU bargaining teams are negotiating now to improve the lives of all unclassified employees.

We can’t do it alone. We need your support. If you let your employer know, in every way, that you are prepared to take action to win a better contract, we will succeed. That means showing your support – every step of the way.

The enclosed poster is one simple way that you can tell this employer that you mean business in this round of bargaining. Stick it up in a visible place where you work.

Then, plug yourself in to our campaign. Talk to your OPSEU steward, local president, or local executive committee members. Call our OPS mobilization hotline at 1-877-561-8692. Check out our web site at www.opseu.org. Or contact the nearest member of our Unclassified Working Group (turn this page over for names and phone numbers).

Unclassified members now make up over 30 per cent of the OPSEU bargaining unit in the OPS. That’s close to 14,000 people. Working together, we can pressure or persuade this employer to agree to real contract improvements that will have a real impact on your life. Working together, we can succeed.

Thank you in advance for your support.

In solidarity,
