At the Corrections table:
Reject this gross insult
At the Corrections Table, the employer didn’t table an offer, they tabled an insult.
After eight weeks of having its proposals completely ignored by this employer, your Corrections team received a so-called “offer” that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. What came across the table was an insult to every man and woman who risks their lives, every day, to keep this province safe.
The employer has offered the Corrections Category a wage hike of 1.95 per cent per year in each successive year of a three-year deal.
The employer is also offering, in addition, up to 0.5 per cent for the first year only – provided that classified staff completely sell out the unclassified staff. Under the employer’s proposal, classified staff may get the additional 0.5 per cent in the first year by allowing the employer to make it much
harder for unclassified staff to get converted to classified status.
The only other item tabled was the employer’s position on “call back,” an issue with virtually no impact on the Corrections Category. The Central Table received exactly the same offer. Clearly, the employer refuses to recognize Corrections as a distinct entity in the public service.
The Corrections Team unanimously recommends that members cast a loud and resounding NO vote on Feb. 26, 27 and 28.
“After sitting around and waiting eight weeks to hear from the employer, and then having to force them to give us an offer, this is a gross insult,” said Barry Scanlon, chair of the Corrections Bargaining Team. “The answer to this contemptuous offer can be only one thing – NO. We want a 100 per cent
rejection by our members. The employer is telling you that you aren’t worth very much. Let’s send back an answer that’s loud, and very, very clear.”
