STRIKE ISSUE
Issue #52 May 3, 2002
Team unanimously recommends acceptance
Your Central Bargaining Team is unanimously recommending acceptance of the tentative agreement reached May 2, 2002.
We knew going into this round of bargaining that it was unlikely we would achieve every demand that was put forward. We also knew that we were going up against an employer that was bent on destroying Ontario’s public services and cared little about the workers that delivered them.
Having said that, we recognize the hardships you have endured over the past 51 days. We wish we could say that we were delivering everything that you asked for. We’re not. However, we feel that we have gained as much ground as possible. On the five main issues at the bargaining table, we made progress on
pensions, wages, unclassified issues and “term classifieds”. With respect to benefits, we still came out $3 million ahead despite the employer’s concessions.
We thank you for your support. While we know that not all of our members are happy with this contract, we believe that this deal, all things considered, is worthy of acceptance.
