Real Deal

Issue #31 March 9, 2002

“Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

12:01 a.m., March 13

The employer continues to waste everyone’s time with their eye-dropper approach to bargaining. The employer’s proposed benefit caps, along with every other concession, remain on the table. We’ve said, “No thank you!”

Today, they tabled an offer consisting of two items. This offer was described by the employer as comprehensive and substantial. It wasn't. The employer must be reading from a different dictionary than we are.

At the time of the printing of this newsletter, the employer had not met with us about any of the key issues - and we are just three days away from a strike!

We all have to be ready for 12:01 a.m. on Mar. 13. If we do not have a deal, picket lines will be set up and we will be on strike.

“As we’ve been saying, and continue to say, we are here to negotiate a collective agreement,” said Marg Simmons, chair of the OPS Central Team. “This employer is giving us every indication that they are not willing to negotiate. We are here, waiting to meet with them, and they continue to stall or offer miniscule improvements at the high cost of takeaways. We will not go there - our members and their families deserve much more than that.”
