Real Deal
STRIKE ISSUE

Issue #47       April 19, 2002

Bargaining continues throughout the weekend.

Stay tuned.

We will call their bluff

In the Apr. 17 issue of the Real Deal, we reported that the employer had offered a four-month extension to the Factor 80 provision, with certain conditions. We informed the employer that they had no right to demand conditions, and that we would be applying for arbitration on a seven-month, condition-free Factor 80 extension.

In the latest “Employer QuickFacts”, the employer told OPSEU members that the union turned down a four-month extension of Factor 80 “with no strings attached”.

The OPSEU Pension Trust (OPT), which is jointly administered by both OPSEU and the employer, would have to be informed as to this extension. Therefore, we are asking the employer to forward the necessary documents to the OPT, which state they are willing to agree to the extension without conditions. We will then gladly sign them. The OPT should be able to confirm this with the employer on Monday. If not, it will prove conclusively that the “Employer QuickFacts” was once again misleading OPSEU members.

Meanwhile, we will be pursuing the remaining three-month extension (to Oct. 31, 2002) at arbitration, which we are confident we will win under the terms of the Pension Trust agreement. The employer continues to stall by not agreeing to an arbitration date.

We are resisting the employer’s attempt to restrict our right to extend Factor 80, along with other pension improvements, at the bargaining table.
