Issue #45 April 13, 2002
They’re at it again
Late Friday afternoon, the employer released two new “Employer QuickFacts” about what’s supposedly going on at the bargaining table.
They should call them “QuickLies.”
In the bulletins, the employer accuses OPSEU of breaching the media blackout, and has published some deliberately misleading information.
We believe that honouring the blackout is the quickest route to a settlement. We do not intend to be drawn into a game of accusations and counter-accusations. We do intend to respect the wishes of the mediator.
For the record, the blackout was actually broken on Wednesday, April 10 when Management Board Assistant Deputy Minister Kevin Wilson issued a memo to OPS managers - a memo that, quite naturally, found its way into the hands of the Canadian Press, the Toronto Sun, the Toronto Star, and other media outlets.
For reasons known only to himself, Wilson appears to be trying to destabilize negotiations at a critical point.
Does his boss, David Tsubouchi, really know what Wilson is up to? If not, he should find out - fast.
Our message to Wilson is this:
It is a desperate person who must lie to make their point. Your employees, the members of OPSEU, are not listening to you. We will not be moved by lies, by intimidation, by threats of arrest or by anything else you want to throw at us - unless of course you would like to offer us a contract worth
signing.
Enough propaganda, enough lies! Bargain fairly, and not in the media. We have consulted with our principals, Mr. Wilson. OPSEU members are not persuaded by your underhanded attempts to poison the bargaining environment.
We want a contract, and we want it now. Respect the blackout.
The bargaining teams would like to invite all members to attend the coronation party at Queen’s Park on Monday. Come on, folks - it’s time to persuade them.
