The following message was issued on Mon., Apr. 1 by the Office of the Director, Labour Management Services, Ontario Ministry of Labour:
“At the request of the Mediators, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and the Government of Ontario have agreed to return to the bargaining table on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. The parties further agreed to the re-imposition of a Media Blackout, effective immediately.”
The strike continues: OPSEU asks all OPS members to support their bargaining teams and maintain their strong picket lines, as usual.
Further information will be posted whenever it can be made available.
On Mar. 21, 2002, the government wrote to OPSEU stating that they were prepared to accept OPSEU’s request to extend the Factor 80 provision to members until Nov. 30, 2002, subject to their ability to work out some of the details. Additionally, the employer sent out their own press release on
Mar. 22 stating that, “the government has agreed to OPSEU’s latest proposal to extend early retirement to employees on a short-term basis.”
The employer has now reneged on this issue, despite their press release in which they bragged about their “good will”. It would appear that the employer is trying to block us from using our own surplus, regardless of what is in the sponsorship agreement.
This issue will now go to arbitration. OPSEU has used a provision in the plan that allows us to write to the Chief Justice of Ontario and have them appoint the government nominee, since the employer has refused to appoint an arbitrator to the process.
