The Factual
Report on Corrections Negotiations
Issue 3 - October 4, 2001
And the winner is…
As you can see, we now have a name for Corrections
Bargaining Update.
The Corrections Team selected The
Correct View from an extensive list of entries that came in from
across the province. The submissions ranged from very serious to
downright hilarious, and the Team members had their work cut out for
them in selecting just one title.
“One of the main concerns in any
round of negotiations is false rumours that can spread like wildfire,”
said Barry Scanlon, chair of the Corrections bargaining team. “This
title conveys perfectly that if you don’t hear it from us, it may
not be true.”
Our winner is Fred Tucker from Local
233 (Guelph C.C.). Our thanks to all of you who put on your thinking
caps and participated in the contest.
Progress being made
The Corrections Team has made some
progress this week in resolving issues around essential services.
The team has been busy touring
different facilities, and verifying information that has been received
across the table.
Team members are optimistic that they
will be able to complete the essential service agreement process in
the near future so that they can move on to issue bargaining.
More surveys coming
It has been learned that some members
in institutions and probation and parole offices did not receive a
copy of the essential services surveys. More are being prepared and
will be on the way very soon.
Ending the dues confusion
Some members have expressed confusion
about the amount of dues that are deducted if essential service work
is performed during a strike.
Although OPSEU convention passed a
policy that requires 100 per cent dues, an Ontario Labour Relations
Board decision on January 12, 1999 ruled that the amount of dues
deducted from an employee performing essential services during an OPS
strike would not exceed the level set in 1996. That amount was 30 per
cent in addition to regular OPSEU dues.
OPSEU dues now stand at 1.375 per cent.
Therefore, the amount of dues that would be paid by essential service
workers in the event of a strike would be 31.375 per cent.
E-mail back in service
The Corrections Team had a brief bout
with the electronic gremlins this week causing an interruption in
their e-mail service. All is well, and you can e-mail the team at correctionsteam@opseu.org.
