The Factual Report on Corrections Negotiations

Issue 27 - March 6, 2002

“El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido.” - The people united will never be defeated.

98 per cent!

Resounding support for the Corrections Bargaining Team

Members of the Corrections Bargaining Team are delighted with the massive show of support for the Team’s recommendation to reject the employer’s offer.

“Members across the province have given a resounding thumbs down to a pathetic offer,” says Barry Scanlon, chair of the Corrections Bargaining Team. “Now the hard work begins.”

The Corrections Team returned to the bargaining table with the employer on Tuesday, Mar. 5 to find nothing had changed. Despite the attempts of an Ontario Labour Relations Board mediator, the employer showed no interest whatsoever in bargaining with your Team.

“We want a deal, but we can’t do it ourselves,” says Scanlon. “We’re making ourselves available 24 hours a day if they want to negotiate.”

Stay tuned!

No CWWs during a dispute

No Compressed Work Week schedules will be permitted during essential services. In the event of a strike or lockout, the maximum length for a shift will be 8 hours and a maximum of 40 hours in one week. This applies to those on Schedule 4.7.

The exceptions are probation officers in COMSOC who will work 12 hours and 42 minutes over two days, and probation and parole officers in Corrections who will work 8 hours and 6 minutes over one day.

Radio ads started today

Radio ads on the dangers of working in Ontario jails began today on stations across the province. The hard-hitting ads are based on a true story of convicted armed robbers who were released early due to sub-standard jail conditions. Listen for them!
