The Factual Report on Corrections Negotiations
Issue 26 - March 1, 2002
“Salvation for a race, nation or class must come from within. Freedom is never granted; it is won. Justice is never given; it is exacted.” - A. Philip Randolph
Take that!
The Corrections Category has sent a message so simple that even the employer can understand it - take this so-called offer, and shove it.
Corrections has rejected the employer’s disparaging wage offer by 98 per cent. The Central Table offer was rejected by 88 per cent. Voter turnout was 79 per cent.
“It is beyond my comprehension how the employer could have thought that this was a legitimate offer,” said Barry Scanlon, chair of the Corrections Bargaining Team. “Our members recognized this offer for exactly what it was - a deliberate insult to the men and women who risk their lives to serve the people of
Ontario.”
Scanlon points to the increasing number of serious incidents in corrections as a symptom of the six and a half years of Tory destruction.
“Our members are fed up with being bullied and ignored,” Scanlon said. “They have now responded to the employer in the strongest way possible. The Corrections Bargaining Team will be very happy to officially deliver this response to the employer on Mar. 4.”
The Corrections Bargaining Team expresses their appreciation for the incredible efforts of the members, member mobilizers and OPSEU staff who worked tirelessly to distribute information and run the vote.
“We want to thank each and every member who came out to vote,” Scanlon said. “You have given us the strong support we need to maintain our position.”
Scanlon said that the Corrections Bargaining Team is ready and willing to meet the employer head on. “We now have the ammunition to bargain a real collective agreement for the men and women who are Ontario’s front line of defence.”
Information kept strictly confidential
Earlier this week, a memo to all staff was sent out by the employer with regard to OPSEU receiving names, addresses and phone numbers for all employees. OPSEU gained access to this information after an order was written by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
The release of this information from the employer is a common practice with nearly all trade unions. It is done for administrative purposes, such as distributing information and facilitating contract offer and ratification votes.
Please be assured that ALL member information received by OPSEU is kept strictly confidential. OPSEU respects members’ rights to privacy, and information is never released outside of the organization without your express permission.
