The two-step election process wrapped up Saturday, June 21, when
delegates to the Central Bargaining Conference elected team members to
represent unclassified workers and those in the Administration,
Institutional and Health Care, Office Administration, and Operational
and Maintenance/Technical classification groups.
Delegates to the regional bargaining conferences held June 7 had
already elected one team member from each of OPSEU’s seven regions, as
well as the Corrections bargaining team.
Eric Morin, the Central Employees Relations Committee chair, has been
elected chair of the Central/Unified bargaining team.
“It is truly an honour to lead the 42,000 women and men who perform
important work on behalf of the people of Ontario on a daily basis,”
Morin said.
“My prime objective is always to improve the quality of life for all
OPSEU members. Our work in this round of bargaining will continue to be
focused on rebuilding public services so that our members enjoy
stability in their lives and every citizen of this province can count on
a strong public service that will ensure their health, safety and
prosperity.”
The priority demands voted on by members at local demand-setting
meetings in the spring will be compiled into a book for the bargaining
teams. Team training is scheduled for Sept. 8 -12. Starting Sept. 15,
the teams will review demands and special cases and begin formulating
bargaining proposals. The teams will start bargaining the issues with
the government Nov. 4. Bargaining will continue to Dec. 23 by which time
the teams will have a deal to recommend for acceptance or an offer to
recommend for rejection. If there is no deal, the union and the
government will return to the table in the new year to bargain Essential
and Emergency Services.
