Get on the bus!
On June 11, the Ontario Liberal Party will hold its annual general meeting in Ottawa.
OPSEU has organized a rally for that day. This is our chance to bring a message to those who run the Ontario Liberal Party: It’s time for Dalton McGuinty to keep his promise to rebuild public services. That starts with a new contract for OPS members.
Contact your nearest OPSEU regional office for bus departure times. The rally starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Ottawa Congress Centre, 55 Colonel By Drive. Get on the bus! Your future depends on it.
Media blackout continues
The Central and Corrections Bargaining Teams continue to meet with the mediator, William Kaplan, who is assisting in negotiations.
Discussions, positions or possible resolutions of any bargaining matters cannot be reported until the mediator decides otherwise.
The bargaining teams are working hand-in-hand with Lead Negotiator Terry Baxter, Senior Negotiator Brian Gould, Negotiator Gus Collins, Negotiator Pat Schillemore, and are being advised by research officers, the OPSEU legal team and other staff.
Both teams appreciate the members’ continued support as they strive towards a collective agreement that treats you with respect.
Editorial “shout outs”
The editorial team of The Source wishes to thank all the members who are writing us and sending in names for the Sunshine Clubs, Mindless Managers and who send us letters and e-mails of encouragement and support. Keep sending them our way; we appreciate your interest and enthusiasm!
We would like to thank all the mobilizers, Executive Board Members, local activists and OPSEU staff who send out our newsletter via e-mail and print. Your help is fantastic as The Source is read by thousands of members.
We’d also like to send “shout outs” to Terry Baxter, Don Ford, Paul Bilodeau, Jan Borowy, Mike Grimaldi and David Cox who are helping us along the way when distribution and deadlines need quick action.
The editorial team would also like to say “hi” to the hundreds of managers who read our so-called “rag” with interest. We hear that you get more information about bargaining from us than from your bosses. Isn’t that special?
In Solidarity,
Len Mason, Moira Cowan & Beth Anich

Mindless Managers
Here’s this week’s list:
· A classified employee requested three months off for medical leave. The manager denied the employee the time off, even though she had a doctor’s note. The employee died two weeks later.
· An employee was arguing with management about a security issue at the front reception area. The branch deals with irate clients and there is not much protection for the front line workers. The employee was concerned for the safety of the workers and brought this to the attention of the manager. The manager’s
response was, “We do not get that many irate clients, and I don’t see the big deal in your concern.” Does the manager not realize it only takes one person?
· A deputy superintendent at Central East Correctional Centre spends part of her day going around the institution ripping down union posters. She should know how important it is for locals to keep their members informed as this deputy was a former union activist. Although she tries to make it difficult for our
members to get information, the local executive works even harder to insure the members have the proper information, especially when they overwhelmingly rejected the employers offer.
