CANADA-CHINA FIPA

Stop Harper from selling out Canada’s future

October 31, 2012

On Thursday, November 1, tens of thousands of Canadians will tell Prime Minister Stephen Harper to put the brakes on a secret trade deal he’s signed with China. If approved by Parliament, the deal will give Chinese companies the right to sue Canadian governments who attempt to protect our jobs, resources, and public services. Critics say the Canada-China Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Act (FIPA) will turn Canada into nothing more than a resource colony of China .

But the deal is not yet law. Not long ago in Canada, international trade deals were subject to many months of public scrutiny and intense debate. Stephen Harper has so far refused to let a proper debate take place. That’s why on Thursday, November 1, thousands of Canadians from unions, the women’s movement, and dozens of other groups will be demanding that Harper hold parliamentary hearings into the Canada-China FIPA.

Please watch for a message on Thursday, November 1 that will tell you how you can join us in sending what we hope will be at least 25,000 emails to Stephen Harper and other key players behind this terrible deal for Canada.
