SARS Alert in Toronto
Since the outbreak of the SARS in the Toronto area in late March, OPSEU has been meeting with other health care unions and the Ontario Hospital Association to work out procedures and protocols to protect OPSEU members working in these hospitals.
On May 27, the province disclosed that four hospitals (North York General, St Michaels’ Scarborough Hospital, and the Etobicoke site of the William Osler Health Care Centre) would be designated as leading a “coordinated effort” in addressing the latest SARS outbreak. This could mean transfers of patients and some staff
among these hospitals.
OPSEU has taken the position that there must be adequate funding to cope with the outbreak and that all health care workers affected must be compensated, and that there should be no loss of seniority, service or benefits.
Information on any agreements reached between the unions and the OHA will be posted on this website as soon as it is available.
