Philippine legislators tour of Canada
Dear friends and members of the
Bayan-Canada, Migrante Ontario, and the Philippine
Network for Justice and Peace:
Please find attached some background information
regarding the Philippine legislators' tour of
Canada, including a poster for our main events in
Toronto this Wednesday, April 9
and this Sunday April 13,
2008.
We are very privileged to receive three eloquent and
resolutely pro-people Philippine elected officials
in Toronto from April 6-10, 13 and 18.
The visitors are: Rep. Satur Ocampo of Bayan Muna
(People First) Partylist, Rep. Crispin Beltran of
Anakpawis (Workers) Partylist and Rep. Luzviminda
Ilagan of the Gabriela Women's Partylist (see
attached documents for their bios).
Satur Ocampo is a leading opposition leader in the
Philippine Senate and a former business journalist
and political prisoner under Marcos who was
re-elected last year despite the fact the Arroyo
government tried to imprison him; Crispin "Ka Bel"
Beltran is a charismatic 75 year old labour leader
with a heart problem who also re-elected from his
prison cell in a hospital; and Luz Ilagan is a
respected teacher and leader in the women's movement
from the "violence-wracked province of Mindanao" who
survived a bomb attack against the Philippine
Congress five months ago in which her driver died.
Many in Toronto may have already had the privilege
of meeting Ka Bel during his visit to Toronto
several years ago as head of the Philippine labour
organization, KMU (May First Movement).
