OPSEU Executive Board makes history with web conference

January 27, 2012

The two-day January Executive Board meeting made OPSEU history. 18 different web conference feeds were included so that Board Members from every corner of the province could participate without leaving the comfort of their living-rooms. Avoiding icy roads and lengthy travel times, Board Members also saved OPSEU $ 15,000 in the process.

“This is the way forward for OPSEU,” said President, Warren (Smokey) Thomas. “Web conferencing is a technology that can work for all of us, at every level of the organization.”

“Times are changing, and we are on the cutting edge of technology advances that help our union’s bottom line,” said 1st Vice-President/ Treasurer, Eduardo Almeida.

The web conference set-up was handled by OPSEU Head Office staff, who did four trial runs with the technology to ensure the event ran smoothly. EBM Jamie Tocker handled the speaker’s list, which enabled participants to add their name to a special feed on the interactive white board.

“The feedback we received from participants was very positive,” said Almeida. “This new tool is a key technological advantage for our union.”

All of OPSEU’s Regional Offices have been set up to accommodate web conferencing. To set up a meeting using this technology, please contact OPSEU Resource Centre Acting Supervisor, Kathryn Kaminski, by calling 416-443-8888.
