Transportation Enforcement Officers keep our roads safe

August 20, 2010

This news story by CHCH News on yesterday’s truck safety blitz along Highway 401 highlights the important work of OPSEU members in keeping poorly-maintained potentially dangerous trucks off Ontario roads. CHCH News filmed a team of Transportation Enforcement Officers checking trucks for safety violations at the Trafalgar South Truck Inspection Station, near Milton.

Malfunctioning brakes and poorly-fastened wheels are just two of the violations caught by the Officers, thereby averting potential disaster. Local 506 president Edie Strachan was interviewed by the CHCH reporter.

“We all need our roads to be safe. The public expects it and we provide that service,” said Strachan.

This important public service is under threat from the government’s decision to close three truck inspection stations on busy southern Ontario highways. The Ministry of Transportation told employees in July that the Fort Erie, Winona and Sarnia North stations will be shut down this year as part of the government’s goal of downsizing the Ontario Public Service by five per cent by Mar. 31, 2012.
