(TORONTO) – Hundreds of uniformed correctional officers are expected to descend Aug. 27on the south lawn of Queen’s Park in a demonstration of support for their colleagues at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre where, for 11 days, more than 200 officers have found themselves in a dispute over safety and disciplinary issues with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

The goal of the Aug. 27 rally at Queen’s Park is to secure a meeting with Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Madelaine Meilleur in order to reach a resolution to the impasse at HWDC. Meetings on Aug. 27 have already been scheduled with opposition critics with from the Conservatives and NDP.

“All we have encountered with our local administration is roadblocks and incompetence,” said Dan Sidsworth, representing more than 5,000 correctional officers with OPSEU. “Only the Minister can break the logjam and that’s why we anticipate she will agree to meet with us.”
