BROCKVILLE - The union representing over 200
skilled professionals at the Brockville Mental Health Centre (BMHC)
has filed an application with the Ontario Relations Labour Board
(OLRB) in order to keep trained professionals working in the
mental health care field.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union
(OPSEU) has filed an application under the Public Sector Labour
Relations Transition Act (PSLRTA). If the application is
successful, skilled professionals currently working at the BMHC
would be allowed to follow their work when programs move to
Ottawa on March 31, 2011.
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas says that
it makes little sense to throw away years of skill and expertise
in the mental health care sector.
“Our members are, quite simply, the best in
their field,” Thomas said. “All we are asking is that the
employer allows these highly-skilled professionals to follow
their work to Ottawa, and continue serving those with mental
health issues.”
“More important, Thomas adds, is to prevent the
loss of services in mental health care…services that are already
at a premium”
Thomas also remarked, “The loss of this skilled
workforce will cause irreparable harm to mental health care, and
to the clients and families that rely on them.”
