Stop the attacks on ATU Local 279 and start working on a fair settlement: OPSEU

January 16, 2009

OTTAWA - It’s time the Mayor and certain Ottawa city councilors stopped their attacks on striking Ottawa Transit workers and let their negotiating team get down to the serious business of bargaining. It is possible to negotiate a fair and reasonable settlement but it cannot be done through the media, says the eastern Ontario vice president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

“The amount of blatant misinformation about the strike and senseless attacks on the leadership and workers of ATU Local 279 is unbelievable and should stop immediately,” said Dave Lundy, of Ottawa, vice president for Region 4 of OPSEU.

“It is extremely unprofessional for the mayor and for members of city council to use the media to demonize ATU Local 279 and, unfortunately, too many in the local media are willing to go along with this farce. City council could play a much more constructive role by bringing both sides together.”

OPSEU represents more than 11,300 workers in Ottawa and area, including employees of the Ontario Public Service, health care professionals, community college educators and support staff, and the LCBO.
