TORONTO – OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas and Ontario
Public Service (OPS) workers will celebrate the kick-off of their contract
negotiations with the Ontario government at an event Nov. 3
DATE: Nov. 3, 2008
LOCATION: Ministry of Transportation Complex, 1201 Wilson Ave., Building D,
Sunroom
TIME: 12 noon – 2 p.m.
Union and government bargaining teams will meet for the first
time on Nov. 4, 2008.
“Our next contract with the provincial government is all about
strengthening public services with well-paying jobs in the face of an economic
downturn,” said Thomas, President of the 130,000-member Ontario Public Service
Employees Union. “Cutting or delaying spending in the public sector will make
Ontario’s economic picture worse, not better. Most people understand that when
working people do well, business does well. Every dollar spent in the public
sector not only provides a service that people need, but also provides income
that supports local families and local economies.”
Thomas pointed to the government’s own figures, released in last
week’s economic update, that show per capita spending in Ontario on public
services – at $124 – is the second lowest of all Canadian jurisdictions. “We’ve
already cut to the bone,” Thomas said. “There’s no more fat.”
The Nov. 3 kick-off event in Toronto, attended by President
Thomas and the Central and Corrections Bargaining Teams, precedes events
scheduled across the province the next day, Nov. 4, 2008.
There are 42,000 OPSEU public service members in 5,000 worksites
in 276 communities across the province. The OPS contract expires Dec. 31, 2008.
