LHIN runs from criticism over mental health cuts at Ajax-Pickering

AJAX -The Central East Local Health Integration Network is running from criticism over proposed cuts to mental health beds at the Ajax-Pickering site of the Rouge Valley Health System – literally.

Scheduled to discuss a controversial implementation report on mental health services at Rouge Valley Health System, the LHIN board has chosen an odd location to do so – 73 kilometers away from Ajax in Cobourg. The meeting will be June 6 at 8:30 a.m.

“I’m sure the citizens of Cobourg are interested in the cuts at Ajax-Pickering,” said Warren (Smokey) Thomas, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, “but the citizens of West Durham, where the hospital is located, might be more interested in the outcome.”

OPSEU is challenging the LHIN to listen to the community and reschedule the board meeting in Ajax.

“This demonstrates how out of touch this LHIN is with the citizens they are appointed to serve.”

The Local Health Integratration Networks were appointed in 2006 to make health service decisions closer to local communities. Well, almost.
