| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 13, 1999 Quinte Hospital Workers Choose OPSEU Over SEIU
BELLEVILLE OPSEU has won a series of representation
votes at the Quinte Healthcare Corporation in the Belleville, Trenton, Picton and Bancroft
area.
OPSEU will now represent 227 paramedics, lab technicians, x-ray
technicians, mental health employees, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and
dieticians employed by the corporation.
A hospital merger brought together the hospitals in these areas under
one administration. Under the terms of Bill 136, the paramedical workers had the choice of
either OPSEU or SEIU as their new representative.
"This is a tremendous victory for OPSEU, especially when you
consider that SEIU had three times as many members as we did when this campaign
began," said OPSEU organizing representative Linda Kernohan. "Our members made
the difference. When they told SEIU members and non-union workers why they should vote for
OPSEU, it came from the heart. I believe that had a major impact on the vote."
OPSEU president Leah Casselman who visited workers in the area earlier
this week was delighted with the outcome. "Im pleased you have chosen our union
as your representative. OPSEU has a great deal of expertise in health care issues and we
take pride in our commitment in representing our members," she said.
