Negotiations took place on the weekend between OPSEU and
community living agency employers in Middlesex, London and
Chatham-Kent, but did not get off the ground because of a
failure to agree on back-to-work protocols.
"These employers are forgetting that their job is to support
vulnerable individuals," says OPSEU President Warren
(Smokey) Thomas. They are going to have to grow up and start
putting people first."
Thomas said no union can put its members at risk by agreeing
to allow them to be disciplined for events during a labour
dispute. "People don't spend weeks on the line so they can
be fired or suspended when they come back," he said.
Workers at Community Living Prince Edward are also in a
strike position today, but in mediation. The number of
community living agencies facing strikes across Ontario is
now seven, including those in a strike position, with 1,150
workers in total on picket lines.
Smokey Thomas will be in London today for a news conference:
Where:
OPSEU office, 1100 Dearness Drive, Unit 27, London
When:
August 7, 2007 - 3:00 p.m.
"We need to get people back to work now so they can get back to
doing what they do best - working with the people they support
and care about," says Thomas.
