OPSEU Day of Action Nov. 24 targets “back-door
privatization” of LCBO
TORONTO –
Unionized workers at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario
will hand out leaflets to customers outside 25 LCBO stores
on Friday, Nov. 24 to protest the expansion of privately-run
liquor outlets known as “agency stores."
“The people of Ontario
have repeatedly said NO to privatizing the LCBO, yet the
McGuinty government continues to expand the agency stores
program,” said Jo Ann Fisher, acting chair of the Liquor
Board Employees Division (LBED). “Our campaign is about
alerting the public to this back-door privatization and the
threat it poses to our children and our communities.”
Ontario grocery stores,
gas stations, and other businesses now host close to 200
agency stores, nearly double the number there were in 2002.
The McGuinty government announced in May 2006 that 20 more
private outlets will open soon.
“Every major public
health organization in the province says putting the profit
motive into selling booze increases the risk of sales to
minors, intoxicated customers and people who will drink and
drive,” Fisher said. “It’s not good for kids, it’s not good
for communities, and it’s not good for the LCBO, either.”
Many agency stores
could be replaced by real LCBO stores or stand-alone kiosks,
Fisher said.
“There are dozens of
agency stores with sales that could support a public LCBO
store and generate more revenue for the province,” Fisher
said. “Why shouldn’t these communities have the responsible
service and better selection that comes with a real LCBO
outlet?”
