Part-time Ontario college staff to form new association

TORONTO –Delegates representing faculty and support staff from Ontario’s 24 colleges will meet this weekend to form an association representing the 16,000 part-time Ontario college employees currently barred from joining a union.

The new association will begin a membership drive early in 2007, and intends to mount a political campaign to change the current law.

This week, the Geneva-based International Labour Organization (ILO) ruled that these workers should have the right to bargain collectively. The ILO also said the McGuinty government should move rapidly to make the needed legislative changes to allow this.

The delegates to the meeting will be available for media questions and an interesting photo opportunity:

Who: New College part-timers association representing 16,000 workers

When: Sunday, November 19, 1:00 p.m.
