FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mar. 17, 2006
Community Living Mississauga workers
vote to strike
Employees
at Community Living Mississauga have voted 71.2% to authorize
the bargaining team to call a strike if necessary to support
their demands in this round of collective bargaining.
OPSEU Local
251 represents over 350 members in over 80 different work
locations who provide a variety of supports to individuals
with an intellectual handicap.
The
outstanding issues are benefits, wages, mileage and part-time
issues.
The current
contract expired on August 31, 2005, no strike deadline has
been set.
The next
scheduled bargaining date is March 20 2006.
Employers
providing developmental services have extreme retention and
recruitment problems. Many part-time workers are forced to
have two or three different jobs as there is no stability or
equity in distribution of hours at this workplace.
Developmental services are being held together by the caring
and dedication of front-line workers.
Community
Living Mississauga receives the majority of its funding from
the Ministry of Community and Social Services. Average wage
increases for the 2000-2004 period are less than increases in
the cost of living.
