OPSEU Convention to
honour David Suzuki
TORONTO: More than 1,500
delegates and observers will attend the 31st annual
Convention of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union at
the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, April 20-22, 2006,
with a focus on how the union can move forward on
environmental sustainability.
In keeping with the “Greening
OPSEU” theme, the union’s Stanley Knowles Humanitarian Award
will be presented to Canadian environmental journalist and
media personality David Suzuki, who will address delegates
at 1.30 p.m. Friday.
“We are very pleased to have
David Suzuki speak to our delegates and reinforce the
importance of doing our part, to be informed and to act --
in our union, in our workplaces and in our daily lives -- on
issues that matter to the future of our planet,” said OPSEU
President Leah Casselman.
OPSEU represents about
125,000 employees of the Ontario government, Ontario’s
community colleges, the LCBO, and more than 500 broader
public sector employers such as hospitals, ambulance
services, school boards, municipalities, social service
agencies and private corporations.
The convention runs each day
