Strike set for April
10 at Community Living Mississauga as talks break down
Employees at Community Living
Mississauga are set to strike at 12:01 a.m. Monday, April 10.
Contract talks broke down
yesterday between management and the Ontario Public Service
Employees Union over wages and the fair treatment of part-time
workers.
“Our bargaining team made a
revised offer but Community Living Mississauga refused to make
any changes to its position,” said Grace Mungal, bargaining
team chair of OPSEU Local 251. “The employer clearly has no
interest in improving conditions for staff and the clients we
support.”
OPSEU Local 251 represents 360
employees in over 80 sites, including group homes, who provide
a variety of supports for individuals with developmental
disabilities. The majority of employees work part-time,
earning less than $15.00 an hour with no benefits.
“Without a fair wage increase,
better benefits and scheduling rights for part-timers, the
high turnover in staff will continue and our clients will
suffer from a constant change in caregivers,” said Mungal.
“Community Living Mississauga
is leaving us with little choice but to go on strike for
better conditions for staff and clients,” she said.
