Downey elected new
Vice-President of Ontario Federation of Labour
Terry Downey of the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union has been elected the new
Executive Vice-President of the Ontario Federation of Labour
at its convention this week in Toronto.
Downey, an OPSEU
vice-president, joins returning OFL full-time executive
members Wayne Samuelson and Irene Harris for a two year term
leading the 700,000 member labour organization.
An employees of the Ontario
Human Rights Commission for 17 years, she has been a strong
advocate for social justice in the province.
Terry has also been active in
her community, playing a role in uniting her west Toronto
neighborhood after the gruesome murder of 11-year old Holly
Jones.
“Terry will be a great asset to
the OFL and to working people in the province of Ontario,”
says OPSEU President Leah Casselman.
Downey replaces Ethel Birkett
LaValley on the three-person full-time executive. LaValley
served as the OFL’s Secretary-Treasurer for 10 years.
