Workers at Family
and Children’s Services hold information pickets as strike
looms
WATERLOO REGION – Workers at
Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region will hold
two information pickets Nov. 3 as the clock ticks down to a
Nov. 12 strike deadline.
Date:
Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005
Time:
12:00 noon
Places: 200 Ardelt
Avenue, KITCHENER
168 Hespeler Road, CAMBRIDGE
“The goal of these events is to
increase public awareness of the issues on the bargaining
table,” said Pat Honsberger, negotiator for 450 workers in
Local 258 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. “With
a 96 per cent strike vote, our members have shown they are
dead serious about making progress on key issues like high
workloads, staff safety, wages, benefits, and adequate
provincial funding.”
Staff at Family and Children’s
Services include child protection workers, residential staff,
and office and clerical staff who investigate child protection
concerns and provide support to children and families in the
Waterloo Region.
The union bargaining team will
meet for mediation with the employer Nov. 10 in an effort to
reach a settlement. Local 258 is in a legal strike position as
of 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 12.
The current contract expired on
March 31, 2005.
