CCAC pension fight continues after court win
OPSEU class action certified to proceed
TORONTO: The fight for fair pensions will continue in the courts after a class action pursued by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union on behalf of therapists and case managers working in Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) was certified to proceed.
When the Ontario government reorganized the community care sector in 1997 it promised employees their pensions would be protected. The OPSEU members later discovered this promise had not been kept, and saw their pensions being eroded, the union sued the government on their behalf.
"This is a first step towards justice for workers in this sector," said OPSEU President Leah Casselman. "It's unfortunate for non-OPSEU employees in home care that other unions have not chosen to join this class action."
OPSEU represents about 2,000 community health care professionals across Ontario.
