College faculty
overwhelmingly reject management proposals
TORONTO: Faculty in Ontario’s
24 colleges have rejected management’s most recent contract
offer by a massive 95.7 per cent in a vote held this week.
Negotiators for the Ontario
Public Service Employees Union, representing 9,000 full-time
and partial-load academic staff, say the key issues
separating college management and the union are workload and
salary.
“Our members have sent a
strong message with this vote,” said Ted Montgomery, chair
of the faculty bargaining team. “The problems of quality in
the colleges, as identified by Bob Rae in his comprehensive
report on post-secondary education on Ontario, will not be
resolved unless management gets serious about addressing the
real workload concerns.”
The previous contract for
academic staff in the colleges expired Aug. 31, 2005.
