Strike likely Sept. 2
at Ambassador Bridge Duty Free Shop
WINDSOR: Ontario Public Service
Employees Union members at the Ambassador Bridge Duty Free
Shop could be on strike a week today if the employer does not
substantially improve on its most recent offer.
Last week, in a large turnout,
employees at the Duty Free Shop voted 100 per cent to give
their bargaining team a strike mandate.
“We are not optimistic,”
reports OPSEU negotiator David Loney. “The employer is still
not taking bargaining seriously.”
There are about 50 bargaining
unit members; all are students at the University of Windsor.
Currently, individual contracts limit each employee to a one
year work term. OPSEU wants to negotiate a longer work term
with the employer, Ambassador Bridge Corp. The length of the
collective agreement itself, and wages, are other major issues
for the union negotiators.
Bargaining resumes Aug. 27. The
union has set a strike date for Sept. 2, at 12:01 a.m.
