OAKVILLE - James Clancy, President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), and Marie Clarke Walker, Executive Vice President of the Canadian Labour Congress, will visit the picket line with donations of support for the 145 members of OPSEU Local 213 at Syl Apps Youth Centre.
Date: July 6, 2004
Time: 1:00 p.m - 3:00 p.m.
Place: Syl Apps Centre, 475 Iroquois Shore Road, Oakville
Clancy recently wrote to Premier Dalton McGuinty on comments by Ontario’s Minister of Children’s Services Marie Bountrogianni in the Ontario Legislature that: “whatever monies are saved now as a result of this disruption will be applied to the new contract.” Clancy said he was concerned these comments could prolong the strike as the employer forces members to
fund the amendments to their own contract.
Staff at Syl Apps Youth Centre have been on strike since April 15, 2004. The main issues are health & safety and wages. The employer, Kinark, has offered a zero per cent wage increase, and concessions in sick time and WSIB benefits.
